Overwatch Momentum Slowed in 2018

Activision Blizzard posted its quarterly financial reports today and it was a bit of a slow quarter for the company. At Blizzard for example revenue for Overwatch and Hearthstone slowed, while World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth broke records.

Revenue at Blizzard grew 20 percent year over year driven by Battle for Azeroth which set a day one sales record of 3.4 million. This helped offset the lowered revenues of Overwatch and Hearthstone.

Overwatch is 2 years old at this point so a slowdown is expected. Hearthstone meanwhile recently surpassed 100 million registered players but Activision says Hearthstone faced stiff competition last quarter. The online card game market is currently occupied by popular games like Elder Scrolls Legends and Magic the Gathering.

Along with an expansion to the Overwatch League Blizzard appears to be in a transitional period. This year’s BlizzCon didn’t offer any major new announcements outside of a controversial mobile Diablo game.

Outside of Blizzard Activision expressed disappointment with Destiny 2 which still isn’t meeting expectations despite releasing a major expansion. Hopefully we’ll see some major announcements from Blizzard next year
