Minecraft Movie Finds a New Director, Story Plot Revealed

The Minecraft movie has found a replacement director after original director Rob McElhenney left the project last year. Peter Sollett, best known for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is taking over for the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator.

Variety reported on the new director and shared some new plot details for the film. The Minecraft movie will apparently star a teenage girl and « her unlikely group of adventurers » who must save the blocky Overworld from a malevolent Ender Dragon. The story was written by Aaron and Adam Nee who replaced McElhenney after he left the project. McElhenney and writer Jason Fuchs wrote the previous version of the story but it seems the story is heading in a different direction under the new director.

The Minecraft movie was originally slated to come out in 2019 when McElhenney was attached. Warner Bros. and Minecraft developer Mojang have been working on a Minecraft film since 2014, and Warner Bros. sees Minecraft as a potentially global franchise. If all goes well the report suggests Warner Bros. intends to capitalize on Minecraft’s brand and popularity.

Minecraft developer Mojang also serves as a producer on the film. Mojang released Minecraft in 2011 and the Lego-like building sim has since become a massive gaming phenomenon. Mojang and Minecraft were purchased by Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion USD.
