See Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters React in Fear When Opponents Grab Smash Balls

Nintendo characters can’t scream « Oh sweet Mary Mother of God I’m going to die, » but this is the next best thing.

The amount of detail packed into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a little bit crazy. Series director Masahiro Sakurai and his team added innumerable touches to the popular Switch fighting game, and we’ll probably be digging them up for years to come. Here’s a good one: Did you know most of Smash Ultimate’s fighters have an « oh, crap » reaction when an opponent grabs a Smash Ball?

Last week, the CommunityGames YouTube channel uploaded a video that shows every Smash Ultimate character’s reaction (or lack thereof) to their impending death. It’s a split-second expression change that is very easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but its inclusion is just great, period.

What makes these reactions better is observing who even has one, and who remains stone-faced when their opponent gets the upper hand. The « cartoonier » characters like Mario, Bowser, Peach, Ness, et al widen their eyes or drop their jaws. The more hardened, realistic warriors are likelier to grimace worryingly. And the characters who don’t react at all are the baddest of bad-asses, e.g. Samus, Bayonetta, Metaknight, and Piranha Plant. Mewtwo, by the way, looks about ready to fly up and away into outer space when one of his opponents gets the Smash Ball. Take that how you will.

This is just one more example of the meticulous detail in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game’s detail, including its epic roster of third-party characters, helped it sell like mad during the Holiday 2018 season. And what’s good for Smash is good for the Switch: The Switch’s sales numbers continue to float along on a bed of dollar signs.
